About the Role:

Finance Assistant (6 Posts)

AFC Grade 2 - £17,652 per annum

We are seeking enthusiastic students who are undertaking their work placement year from an Accounting degree course to fill 6 posts across the Financial Accounting (Capital & Research) and Financial Management (Management Accounting & Costing) Departments. The post-holders will support Finance Managers in a number of functions associated with the maintenance of the Trusts Budgeting, Income, Capital, Research and Costing processes.

Finance leadership will ensure that placement students are given dedicated support and supervision to enable them to gain a rich and fulfilling year within healthcare finance. Many of our previous placement students have gone on to secure permanent jobs at the Trust after graduation, with significant promotion potential for the best candidates due to the opportunities presented within a Finance team of over 180 staff.

The experience that would be obtained with each of the placements is as follows:

Capital Finance (2 placement posts)

The placements are based in Capital Finance which is a team of approximately eight staff. It provides a high quality Financial Management service (planning and monitoring) to the STHFT capital programme as to the Estates and Informatics corporate directorates on both capital and revenue issues. The team also leads the technical capital accounting requirements of the NHS, thereby giving insight into the operational challenges involved in a major healthcare organisation. Therefore the placement will provide experience of both Financial Accounting and Management Accounting, including both month-end and year-end processes.

Research Finance (1 placement post)

This placement is based in Research Finance which is a team of approximately eight staff. This team provides excellent financial management and contracting services to the STHFT Clinical Research and Innovation Strategy. It also provides financial leadership and performance management to the regional Clinical Research Networks hosted by STHFT. The team also provides timely, relevant and accurate financial information in relation to the research project activities to enable STHFT Board and individual Directorates/Investigators to monitor progress against the approved Financial Plan and individual studies. Therefore the placement will provide experience of both Financial Accounting and Management Accounting, including both month-end and year-end processes.

Financial Management (3 placement posts)

The placements are each based in one of the three teams that provide a high quality financial management service to Clinical and Corporate Directorates. Each team comprises of approximately 11-14 staff. The placement will give an insight into the financial and operation challenges involved in delivery of healthcare in a large diverse organisation. The placement will provide experience of management accounting, including both month-end and year-end processes. Two of the FM placements is also likely to provide support to the STHFT Costing Team.

Students applying for these placements may express a preference as part of their application regarding which of the placement areas they would prefer to work in. If an applicant is offered a placement, we will take this into account in allocating the placements. However we cannot guarantee that all preferences can be accommodated.

Requirements:

  • 5 GCSE including Maths and English at Grade C or above
  • Demonstrably good IT skills including proficiency in the use of Excel
