Many undergraduates from Sheffield University Management School go on to further study at MSc level, either straight after their first degree or later in their career. Many Sheffield University Management School alumni go on to join our community of scholars after studying for a PhD. If you'd like to take the next step in your academic journey, you will engage in outstanding socially responsible research and become fully equipped for a successful career in academia or industry.

Entry requirements:

  • An undergraduate degree that is equivalent to a UK classification of upper second-class honours or above.
  • A masters level qualification of merit or above, with a minimum of 60 per cent in the dissertation, research project element or equivalent experience.
  • Our English Language requirement is IELTS at 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component or equivalent.

Doctoral Research Centre

The Doctoral Research Centre underwent a full refurbishment in January 2019 to provide our PhD students with exceptionally high-quality spaces for working and socialising. A key aim of the improvement works was to encourage a strong sense of community among students. To meet these needs, flexible working spaces and shared study facilities were created and the building was also equipped with improved accessibility features.

The University Library

The University of Sheffield offers world-class library facilities, which for PhD students provides a source of both information and support. The library has three different sites, each of which offer unique working environments for both silent and group study.

Research Support

Located within the Management School, the Research Office provides tailored support for our students. A dedicated team are on hand throughout the working week to help advise you on all administrative aspects of your studies.

Futures First

Futures First is our employability offer to students. Our students can access career coaching, skills training, placements and special events. The Management School has its own Futures First Employability Hub which offers career development opportunities for our students. The Hub provides one-on-one advice and workshops, the chance to network with top graduate employers, and also advertises both student and graduate jobs.

English Language support

The University offers a wide range of English language support and development services to students including a specialist dyslexia/SpLD tutorial service.

Doctoral training programmes

At Sheffield you will benefit from access to multiple doctoral training opportunities available on-line and face-to-face. Provided by the University, the Faculty of Social Sciences, and the White Rose University Consortium, each of these programmes provide training to develop your skills as a researcher.

Doctoral Research Conference

The Management School hosts a doctoral conference which is an opportunity for our doctoral researchers to present and receive feedback on their research in a supportive atmosphere. It is an opportunity for our students to develop their presentation skills as well as to learn from the research of others.

Professional memberships

Some modules and programmes at Sheffield University Managment School are accredited by professional bodies. Students graduating from an accredited programme can gain professional recognition or membership upon graduation, or you can join the professional body upon graduation or during your studies. Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) is the international honour society serving business programmes accredited by AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Today, accreditation from AACSB ensures excellence across the school's critical areas including the school’s mission, operations, faculty qualifications and contributions and programmes.

Following accreditation from AACSB, Sheffield University Management School established the Sheffield BGS Chapter in January 2013.

Member eligibility

  • Undergraduate Level*: Students in the top 10% of their year at the point of graduation, according to their academic results, will be invited to Beta Gamma Sigma membership.
  • Masters Level and MBA*: Students in the top 20% of their year at the point of graduation, according to their academic results, will be invited to Beta Gamma Sigma membership.
  • Doctoral level (PhD): All those completing their doctoral requirements are eligible.

Eligible students will be contacted on or around graduation with information about BGS and how to accept membership into the chapter.
