Summer school FAQs

How do I book a place on one of the Summer Schools?

  • Summer school places are topic specific and will be advertised to students on the relevant programmes.
  • In January students will be invited to apply for a summer school via the Management School Gateway.
  • There are two application processes – the first is with the Management School, and once successful, students will be required to register, and pay, online with the host University/Business School.

How much do summer schools cost?

  • Summer School options range from €500 to €2,380 for programme fees and accommodation, the cost of which will be reimbursed to the participant once the programme has been completed.

What is included in the price?

  • Accommodation.
  • Travel and medical insurance, upon request.
  • Programme fees.
  • Some meals (dependent upon summer school programme).
  • Support with the visa application process.

What is NOT included in the price?

  • Travel to and from the accommodation [flights, taxi, train fares both in the UK and abroad] and during the summer school period, unless provided by the host organisation.
  • Meals, unless stated in the summer school programme.
  • Visa application costs and travel to the visa offices in London or Manchester.
  • Social programmes.

Who is eligible to attend the summer schools?

  • Applicants who have passed their Autumn examinations/assessments will be eligible to attend a Summer School.
  • Summer Schools are topic specific and aimed at relevant MBA, MSc and BA programmes. Students from these programmes will be able to apply.
  • Summer School places are not guaranteed as places are limited and dependent upon demand.

When, and how long, do the summer schools run?

  • Summer schools take place between the months of June and August.
  • The duration of the summer schools can be between one week and three weeks depending on the summer school programme.

Do I have to arrange my own travel and accommodation?

  • You are expected to make your own travel arrangements but your accommodation will be booked by the Host University/Business School during the registration period.

Where will I be staying?

  • Usually the host University/Business School will provide accommodation on campus in their University dorms, although some do use hotels. The accommodation will normally comprise of a single en suite room with a separate kitchen and lounge.

Will I have to pay for my own food?

  • Yes, unless this is provided as part of the Summer School programme.

Will the Management School organise my visa for me?

  • You are responsible for organising your own visa application and fee payments. However, the Management School will support you with your application, if required, and will provide you with an information pack to take to the appropriate Visa Office. This will include your Schengen visa application form, travel insurance documents, summer school invitation and acceptance letters, UoS confirmation letter, accommodation and flight details, passport photographs, and copies of your passport and UK residence permits.
  • Visa appointments are made online with the relevant visa office and must be booked at least 6 weeks before travel to allow for any issues which may arise.

Will I be insured?

  • A Certification of Medical/Travel Insurance will be provided by The University of Sheffield for the duration of your chosen summer school upon request.

Will I be expected to do extra assignment work before I travel to the Summer School?

  • Some Summer Schools, such as Vienna, expect students to have completed course assignments before travelling to their School. The length of study expected can vary but further details can be found via the Management Gateway.
  • It is expected that participating students will have read any pre-summer school reading material before the programme commences.

Will I get an extension to complete my dissertation?

  • All students attending the Summer Schools will get an automatic extension to complete their dissertation. The length of the extension will vary depending on the length of the Summer School, so if you are on a 2 week Summer School you will get a 2 week extension.
  • It is important to be aware that some Summer Schools will run in August which may conflict with your dissertation period. Please make sure that you allow for this when considering applying for a Summer School place

Will I receive a qualification at the end of the summer school?

  • No. Most of the summer schools advertise that they offer ECTS credit points towards your University programme. However, this does not apply to the Sheffield University Management School.
  • However, students usually receive an attendance certificate or grade transcript.
