The role:

You will provide high quality service to the firm and its clients concentrating primarily on assisting in the investigation and response of complaints raised against the firm, and also auditing and maintaining quality standards across the firm. The role will be suitable for candidates with a proactive approach to problem solving, and a specific interest in client service delivery and the development of best practice initiatives in legal services.

Additional duties will include supporting the Risk Team in the management of general risk, compliance and regulatory enquiries, auditing against key certifications (currently ISO 9001 – Quality Standard and ISO 27001 – Information Security Standard), and assistance in the effective delivery of key risk projects as required.

The team are based in the Birmingham and Leicester offices, and this role will be based in the Birmingham office, with occasional travel to other offices required.

Your key duties will include:

  • taking telephone calls and dealing with (or escalating) initial enquiries about risk and compliance issues including complaints
  • assisting with Risk Team inbox and answering queries or delegating to relevant members of the team
  • assisting with complaints management and investigation under the supervision of the Risk & Client Services Advisor keeping both the fee earner and complainant fully informed of progress
  • dealing with complainants and providing verbal advice to them following consideration of their complaint issues
  • providing detailed response letters to complainants following investigations with authority to propose compensatory awards where appropriate; understanding those complaints which need to be assessed and resolved on a commercial basis.
  • dealing with the Legal Ombudsman and assisting with complaints resolutions at a formal level
  • assisting with internal auditing of files / work areas to ensure compliance with ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 to include the maintenance of records, assistance in risk and best practice improvement projects
  • accompanying auditors at offices for external audits where necessary
  • reporting to the team on regulatory and legislative changes (identified through monitoring of a variety of sources) which could impact the relevant legal groups / the wider profession
  • assisting with SRA and other regulatory issues as required

Your additional duties will include:

  • internal auditing of files / work areas to ensure compliance with ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 standards
  • assistance in risk and best practice improvement projects

Skills and experience you will have:

  • previous risk experience, ideally gained in dealing with risk and compliance matters
  • experience of working in a client service environment, or within a law firm
  • law degree preferable (but not essential)
  • strong IT skills, particularly Excel
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills; particularly in report writing
  • examples of instances of actively taking ownership and responsibility

Key competencies you will need:

  • an interest in the regulatory environment, client service delivery and continuous improvement
  • strong interpersonal skills and the confidence to handle sometimes challenging telephone calls
  • excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • commitment, flexibility, and a team player approach
