About the Role:

  • Publicity
    • Working with the Engagement Manager to deliver tailored publicity campaigns for each new title, as well as developing strategies for promoting backlist titles through targeted online marketing.
    • Developing and maintaining contacts and relationships with press (including books editors at major newspapers, radio producers, freelancers and online reviewers).
  • Digital Engagement
    • Delivering an online content strategy (including newsletters, regular blogs and specially commissioned AV content).
    • Assisting the Engagement Manager in the planning and delivery of Comma’s new podcast series, developing new audiences and distribution networks.
    • Maintaining our websites and social media accounts.
  • Writer Development – National Creative Writing Graduate Fair
    • Overseeing the programming and delivery of the NCWGF: liaising with delivery partners (MMU and Manchester Writing School) and all participants (including speakers, agents and authors); managing logistics (travel and accommodation requirements); promoting the fair to potential delegates, sponsors and press; updating the website and social media channels; and ensuring the smooth running of the Fair on the day.
    • ­­Reporting and evaluating the NCWGF, as well as other Writer Development work, such as Comma short story courses (in concert with the Engagement Manager).
  • Industry Access and Training
    • ­­Building relationships with local schools, colleges and universities to organise a suite of talks promoting careers in publishing (to be delivered by various Comma staff members).
    • Assisting with the organisation of CPD workshops for the Northern Publishers Network (including the Northern Fiction Alliance within that), as well as trade visits to international book fairs.
    • Coordinating an annual IP forum (where TV and film rights are pitched to producers and script developers).
  • Office Management
    • ­­Monitoring and maintaining office supplies e.g. stationary.
    • ­­Chairing weekly office meetings.
    • ­Convening board meetings and taking minutes.
    • ­Working with interns on the delivery of the above tasks.

Requirements:

Essential:

  • An understanding of the way books are promoted through traditional media coverage (press reviews, radio coverage, etc).
  • Some experience in planning, delivering and marketing public events.
  • A familiarity with all major social media platforms and a sense of what constitutes good social media promotion and what constitutes bad.
  • A familiarity with all basic Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel etc), and basic Google services (e.g. Google Analytics, Google Drive).
  • An interest in contemporary world literature, and particularly the short story.
  • An interest in contemporary world politics and recent history.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to work to deadlines.

Desirable:

  • Experience of marketing and publicising events and/or art projects to the general public, including experience of approaching journalists, sub-editors, and/or radio producers to secure media coverage
  • Familiarity with WordPress, MailChimp, Survey Monkey.
  • Familiarity with design and image software (such as Adobe Photoshop, Quark or Indesign).
  • Experience of managing a website and/or social media accounts.
