Engage on campus

At the Management School we include alumni and employer-led sessions in our student employability programme, as well as career talks and specialist guest lecturers from alumni and practitioners. We welcome alumni to be involved in activities including:

Futures First: Careers discovery series

These events bring together employers, professional bodies, alumni and students with activities focusing on our key areas of work at SUMS. Conferences will include talks from industry experts and friends of SUMS, who will share their experiences of tackling current business issues, helping students bring their studies to life. Our recent conferences included Finance and Business Management.

The aim of this series is to showcase various areas of industry and careers that a Management degree can lead to. Events will provide opportunities for networking, skills development and insight into the different sectors and industries. The series is open to Management Students at all levels across our undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

We encourage alumni to provide students with an insight into your career including:

  • Your current role
  • The organisation you work for
  • Your journey from graduation to now;
  • And any advice you would give to today's graduates.

Students are keen to hear from alumni at various stages in their career, from alumni currently on graduate programes to company directors and partners. As an alumnus and a business professional delivering a talk, you can play an important role in inspiring current students and helping to shape their future careers.

Guest speak on a module

Alumni and business practitioners sometimes lead a session to students that is part of a module on a programme; this can be on one of our undergraduate programmes, our specialist Masters courses, or on the MBA programme. These sessions tend to be in a specialist subject area lasting around 30-40 minutes plus 15-20 minutes at the end for questions.

Students are interested to hear from alumni who work in specialist roles, and are keen to learn how to start marking out their own careers in a particular area. As alumnus this an opportunity to inspire current students and to share with them your own journey, and provide them with practical knowledge about careers in specialist fields.
